Sound, Mermaids and Sirens
Contemporary Connections' new research project is starting to take shape, considering the connections between sound and the historical cultures of mermaids, sirens, lorelei and naiads. We are interested in exploring how the figure of the mermaid has been represented in sound and how this relates historically to societies' attitudes towards women, performance of gender, sexuality, the 'outsider' and disability.
With over 300 works so far in our research catalogue, from the benevolent to the sadistic, we are interested in in making contact with those who are working on 'the mermaid' in sound or who have a story to tell.
