Sounding Food and Music
Sounding Food and Music explores the connections between food, diet, gender and music/sound. The project has four different aspects: creating an online archive of everyday experiences of food and music, a concert of women's music with a new commission by Amy Cunningham, essay volume and exhibition.
You are cordially invited to take a place at our musical dining table…
Contemporary Connection’s Sounding Food and Music Project culminated in a free public exhibition in the foyer space of the Jubilee Library, Jubilee Street, Brighton. Most recently we attended the Breaking Bread event organised by community arts organisation Strike a Light. We are in the process of negotiating further pop-up musical tables - watch this space!
The musical dining table is an opportunity to sit, listen and talk across our table, featuring music by women composers relating to food, eating and dieting. Contribute your own story of food and music, view our family tree of women composers inspired by food and view work by Amy Cunningham inspired by Daphne Oram’s vision of food and technology.
As part of the exhibition we are continuing to collect experiences and stories from all over the world,
of the role music has in cooking and eating, and how food is used in performance and the creative process. We will use your answers to any of the following questions to create an online archive available through this website. We would like to capture everyday experiences of food and music
What music do you listen to while you cook or eat?
Do you sing certain tunes while cooking or eating particular foods?
Do certain sounds elicit certain tastes for you or vice versa?
Do certain pieces of music remind you of particular foods or special meals?
Do you use food in your musical activities (when composing or performing)?
Do you alter your diet when performing or composing?
Do you use music to help you diet?
